Remembering Susan Lee Kennedy Schuler

I remember the day Susan Lee Kennedy Schuler died in the terrorist attacks on September 11th, 2001. I was teaching Civics at Scottsboro Junior High, and was finishing first period. At ten minutes to 9am, the assistant principal knocked on the door and told me a plane hit the World Trade Center. It took me one second realize these were the actions of Osama Bin Laden. In the days that followed, I took the time to teach my seventh graders why a group of people would want to kill innocent people like Susan Lee Kennedy Schuler. While I didn’t know Susan, I think we can all identify with people like her. We go to work to provide for our families, provide services to our fellow man, and we strive to make our communities a better place for our future generations. So on September 11th, take the time to remember the 2,996 people who lost their lives on this tragic day. Also, remember the people who went to New York from across the country in order to help during the aftermath. Most importantly, remember people in this world are willing to attack innocent American citizens, like Susan Lee Kennedy Schuler, because of the principles we stand for.

I joined the Project 2,996 to help remember victims of the September 11th terrorist attacks. I was randomly assigned Susan Lee Kennedy Schuler, and am writing this post to remember her as part of this project. The day I was assigned Susan, I was quickly overcome by emotion. It made me realize even though it has been eight years families are still hurting. Children still miss their parents and grandparents, spouses still miss their significant others, and Moms and Dads still miss their children. As a 34 year old man, who doesn’t know anyone personally affected by the events of that day, I still fight back the tears when I remember the personal tragedies of that day. I pray you and I ever forget those emotions either.
