Professor Kirk Wood: Government as servant

kirkwoodThere’s no doubt in my mind Tea Party activist rely on the constitution when taking their stand against the tyranny of the statist.  It is essential to not only know the words on the document, but it is equally important to understand the context in which it was written.  I have recently corresponded with someone who specializes in doing just that.  His name is Dr. Kirk Wood, a professor of History at Alabama State University, in Montgomery, Alabama.  Dr. Wood shared with me how he had followed the recent Tea Party events in Montgomery, and how he would enjoy speaking with groups about the Constitution and its origins.  Below, I’m including an editorial which was originally published in the Montgomery Advertiser.  If you enjoy this article and would like to have Dr. Wood speak at your events, you may contact him with the information below:

By Dr. Kirk Wood

For this Fourth of July, let us recall the language of the Declaration of Independence and its original, limited purpose which is announced in the first three lines: To proclaim the independence of the colonies united in the Continental Congress by dissolving “the political bands” that had connected them to Great Britain for more than 200 years and “to assume among the powers of the earth that separate and equal station to which the Laws of Nature and Nature’s God entitle them . . .”

Repeated again in the second and longer paragraph, this “right of revolution” and its origins have taken a back seat to five words (”all men are created equal”) that have come to define the meaning of 1776, together with the myths of the Declaration as the charter of a “national” government and a proclamation of universal rights not as “unalienable” but more as entitlements from government.

For John Locke, however, the essential political and theological problems to be overcome in 17th century England were those of absolute monarchy inspired by Divine Right.

If God Almighty sanctioned unlimited rule by one — usually for the worse — and from Him through Adam (as the first sovereign parent and patriarch) uninterrupted, what could limited monarchists and republicans do to change government for more beneficent purposes?

In a nutshell, they had to look anew at humankind and challenge the long-accepted view that they were born always to be subjects to one authority or another. By distinguishing among different relationships and compacts of government, parental versus political and authoritarian versus voluntary, for example, Locke concluded that humans were born naturally free and equal at least in a state of nature.

As Locke and other contract theorists realized, humans may have been equal in a state of nature (since all, literally, were unrestrained and lawless), but that condition was also one of warfare with the strong oppressing the weak, the rich, the poor and the more genetically endowed doing the same to those less so. After all, God created humans in His own image uniquely rather than equally. He also intended that they not always be alone but “under strong, obligations of necessity, convenience, and inclination” to be a part of society!

For the better safety of all and greater security for property, a compact of government was made by those willing to give up some of their “unalienable” rights to life, liberty and property and to be restrained by laws of their own choosing. Of course, those who formed a government could also agree to dissolve it should it become “destructive” of the ends for which it was instituted.

How interesting it is that the compact theory associated with Natural Rights (not to be confused with Natural Law) is too often ignored in favor of equal rights and Nature’s God.

Although God endowed humans with unalienable rights, government itself proceeded from free men alone. Otherwise, there would be no government at all (anarchy) or only Divine Right monarchy (or what is the same — a theocracy).

Without the compact, in other words, government would not be limited. As the creators of government for limited purposes, the people (or those who were citizens) became the sovereign power over government and rulers at least in America.

While our founders and framers of the 18th century proceeded to construct a more perfect government between 1776 and 1787-1788, according to republican and federal principles, the real revolution was government itself being made the servant of the people and not its master.

This is the lesson of the past that we seem to have forgotten. The principles of 1776 and 1787-88 were indeed liberal in their time and our founders and framers should once again be praised for their legacy of liberty understood in context as freedom from government, notwithstanding slavery (but this subject is altogether another debate).

The Future is Bright Says Obama or Read My Lips

obama 2
In a congress rife with people of privilege, Congressional Representative District 2, Bobby Bright is rare for having labored as a ditch digger, roofer, prison guard, cook, hotel porter, financial adviser and teacher before practicing law. Congressman Bright won’t talk bail-outs. He was never bailed-out. But, with all of that hard work and overcoming obstacles, being a Democrat these days puts a servant of the people in a hard spot. The Democratic Party is no longer the party of the “working people” as it was years ago. No, they talk about “rich people” but are some of the richest in the nation. They want to redistribute OUR wealth. Not theirs.

According to the Congressional Votes Database, Congressman Bobby Bright has voted with a majority of his Democratic colleagues 70.8% of the time during his tenure in Congress. He took office on January 3, 2009. This number does not include votes in which Bright did not vote. He missed 27 votes since taking office.

So, no matter how hard and what size “paintbrush” Bright uses, his efforts to say he is “conservative” can be deceptive, according to how much he votes along party lines. IF he were conservative, he should have a higher percentage, say…90%, 100%. THAT is conservative. He is a member of the “Blue Dog Caucus” in Congress but this last year has proven that those “blue dogs” are mostly “lap dogs.”

Currently, all Tea Party candidates are either leading or closing in the polls in races all across the nation. Congressman Bobby Bright has his work cut out for him. Hopefully, those people he represents in Troy, Eufala, Ozark, Enterprise, Dothan, Greenville and Prattville, Alabama are much wiser than in 2008 when Bright ran for office.

Tonight, President Obama gave his first State of the Union address to the nation. This date is the 65th anniversary of the release of prisoners from their Nazi captors at Auschwitz. It seems ironic that the speech comes on this date, when his socialist agenda has been rammed down American’s throats for a year.

Obama said, “By the time I’m finished tonight, more Americans will have lost their health insurance. Millions will lose it this year. Out deficit will grow. Premiums will go up. Co-pays will go up. Patients will be denied the care they need. Small business owners will continue to drop coverage altogether. I will not walk away from these Americans. And neither should the people in this chamber.”

Clearly, although the majority of Americans are against government-run healthcare and do not want it, he intends to continue to attempt to push it on America. All independent sources that have examined each piece of legislation say this will leave almost the same number of Americans uninsured, weaken quality of care, cause rationing, and our country simply cannot afford it. This defiance clearly is unconstitutional and he and his buddies seem to be in denial over the real “state” of this union.

His efforts to achieve bipartisanship clearly are not what he intended because he said, “Rather than fight the same tired battles that have dominated Washington for decades, it’s time for something new. Let’s try common sense. Let’s invest in our people without leaving them a mountain of debt. Let’s meet our responsibility to the people who sent us here.” In what nation is he living? Honestly, most Americans agree they are tired of the stunts they’ve seen the Democrats pull in the last year. The GOP has been shut out of negotiations and the writing (who IS writing those bills?) legislation all year. At one point, they changed the locks on the doors. No, we won’t forget that stunt, either. Leaving out the GOP senators also leaves millions of Americans without representation in the Senate. Is this the common sense to which he was referring? His policies have crippled an already staggering economy and this is HIS deficit, HIS budget and HIS problem now. Blame others all he wants, he sits in that oval office.

Obama’s talk of taking action related to lobbying activities, cutting spending and being bipartisan falls on deaf ears. He says one thing but does the complete opposite. He said he had excluded lobbyists when it is a fact that those working for many health-related companies paid for advertising that pushed government healthcare. If his past actions are any indication, they can expect a profitable return on their “investment” since we’ve already seen how Obama’s legislation and agenda takes care of ACORN and union groups such as SEIU.

Cutting deficits, cutting spending, being responsible to solve our economic faltering or failing are things we SHOULD BE doing. But it is a fact that Obama’s policies and legislation over the last year have increased our debt and are irresponsible. Clearly, he is out of touch with reality. He gave his speech on the heels of a stunning defeat just last week when the Democratic-ruled Senate lost a seat to a conservative in Massachusetts. If that wasn’t enough, it was Ted Kennedy’s seat, and had been a “Democratic” seat for more years than most can count.

WHEN YOU’RE IN A HOLE, QUIT DIGGING!

Defiantly, Obama continued, saying he would “freeze” discretionary spending.  The three year “freeze” on just what amounts of 17% of the discretionary budget is deceptive. After RAISING the budget by 12.5%, he now actually will only “freeze” 4.5% of discretionary spending.

Hmm, spending freeze. Where have we heard that before? Oh! The Presidential Debates! It’s all very clear. In at least one debate, he referred to a suggestion by Senator McCain to immediately implement a spending freeze as “using a hatchet when we need a scalpel.” What the freeze does achieve is that for three years, the GOP will be prevented from cutting the inflated budgets…sinister symbolic nonsense!

If you voted for Obama, did you KNOW what he really was? What he planned to do to our country? Next time, exactly 1,014 days from today, we will know who we vote for, where they stand on issues and those candidates will KNOW what the American people expect from them. We the People will accept no more lies, games or deception. He has raised the federal deficit to $1.35 Trillion in just one year. And he broadly stated in his speech new programs which will further put us in the hole. Why not let’s take the “stimulus” money that hasn’t been given to the unions and used as payola and give it back to the CHINESE government. Afterall, that IS where it came from. Some have suggested giving it “back” to the American people but we didn’t give it to the government. We are in financial trouble. Sometimes those closest to the problem are the last to see it. Perhaps the problem is what Obama and Co. are trying to achieve. If so, they are doing stunningly well.

Let us not forget the lengths he will go to in order to pass healthcare. Town halls, no town halls, SEIU, ACORN, the mugging of American citizens, fingers being bitten off, pitiful attempts to denigrate The Tea Party by calling those honest, concerned Americans vulgar names and “astroturf.” Real radicals, those who are standing up for America.

Having already admitted since taking office that he’d failed to explain his agenda and connect with the “voters” (not Americans?), Obama unapologetically defended pursuing the same agenda. This includes overhaul of the nation’s health care system, an aggressive approach to global warming, sweeping changes to address illegal immigration, radical reforms of the banking industry and how Wall Street is regulated, as well as how our children are educated. Ambition, that’s what he has. And we’re going to stop him.

The Obama team is reverting to techniques that galvanized his support during his campaign. Obama for America (Organizing for America), Obama’s political organization, has assumed a low profile since his election, texted watch-party information to supporters. The White House also solicited follow-up questions on YouTube.com/CitizenTube, saying Obama would answer them online next week.

We know what was said in the speech, and we know what it meant. This time last year, we were trying to figure out what was happening. Not this year. Let moveon.org, and all of the thugs try, nothing is going to stop the American People. That is a fact. We fight for our country in 2010. Clean sweep 2010!

Fight on, Patriots!

One Year Later…

flag

January 19, 2010 was a busy day for Patriots. A trip to Montgomery, Alabama found hundreds of members of the Tea Party on the steps of the state house. The “Welcome Back” party also drew a few other attendees. These were Republicans who aspire to be the next Governor of the State of Alabama. The “Welcome Back” rally was organized by Tea Party Chapters. People from all over the state came to attend the event. This was intended to emphasize to state legislators the need for a state sovereignty amendment, as well as to address the issue of gun rights.

Candidates Kay Ivey, Tim James, Bill Johnson and state Representative Robert Bentley (who had to be in session) were in attendance at Tuesday’s rally. Several Republican legislators showed up including Greg Wren, Mac Gipson and David Grimes. They braved the comments of speakers during this rally. The message was well-put and notice was taken of the will of Alabamians in regard to our values.

The Republicans were taken to task for not standing up for conservative values. The GOP has shown the inclination recently with the NY23 race and a few others, in backing liberal candidates. The National GOP has given the “hands off” excuse and laid the blame solely at the feet of local GOP officials. This trend is not appreciated nor wanted by the majority of Americans, as could be seen at this rally as well as others in the past.

The State Sovereignty Resolution claiming sovereignty under the 10th Amendment has passed both the House and the Senate of Alabama. The resolution is now headed to Governor Riley’s desk. Earlier in 2009, this writer asked Governor Riley if he would sign such a resolution, if passed. His comment was, “if it gets to my desk, I will sign it.” So there. Governor? Let’s get the pen out, please.

It is also important to note that one year after Barack Obama won the state of Massachusetts by 70% or so, Republican challenger, Scott Brown, who was basically ignored by all but The Tea Party; the race assumed to be going to Democrat Martha Coakley, won the Senate seat vacated by the late Ted Kennedy. This is a huge victory for the GOP, conservatives, The Tea Party and Patriots all across the nation. Donations were sent in from every state in the union to Brown’s campaign in order to help him win this election. This may be an indication of a proverbial bloodbath for Democrats in the House of Representatives as well as Democratic Senators in the fall, 2010. FLIP THE HOUSE! When Americans stand up together, this proves that “we” can fight for America. And, we are fighting for the soul of America.

Fight on Patriots. Enjoy the victory for a few hours; but we have a lot of work to do, a long road to take during 2010. And, congratulations to Senator-elect Scott Brown of Massachusetts.

State Sovereignty Resolution

usgs_piecol
Today (Thursday, January 14, 2010) we learned that the State Sovereignty Resolution (SJR 27) has passed the Senate and is headed to the House. Unfortunately, chances are House Majority Leader Ken Guin will hold it up in committee (as this has happened before.) Please contact your State Representative to tell them how you want them to vote on the State Sovereignty Resolution; you can contact them by going to our home page and under “Alabama in Congress” there’s a link at the bottom where you can find your Representative, your Senator and how to contact them. There is also information on how to contact Ken Guin to let him know how you feel about this being passed

Also, there was an article in The Birmingham News today addressing the state budget and how it depends upon stimulus funds. It has been suggested by more than a few people that perhaps the State of Alabama (like the federal government, like we must do) should “live within its means.”

Please contact your Representative and Senator in Montgomery as well as Governor Riley to let them know to vote against accepting any stimulus money. Again, you can find contact information at our home page as instructed above.

The budget is in trouble; in a previous article, this writer interviewed Representative Paul DeMarco and he specifically mentioned the budget and how the unfunded mandates the federal government was putting on the states (health care and other) could cost Alabama much more than we have. I’m sure they are grappling with many issues. However, WE send our money to Washington, D.C. and THEY are going to LET US have it back with stipulations? Is this wise?

Please don’t forget the “Welcome Back Rally” scheduled for Tuesday at the Statehouse 12:00 – 1:00 p.m. (more…)

Attorney General Troy King Fighting Unconstitutional Health Care Deal

Press PhotoAlabama’s Attorney General Troy King has join forces with more than ten other Attorney Generals from around the country to challenge the constitutionality of the Cornhusker Compromise, which passed the U.S. Senate in December.   I would personally like to thank Mr. King for jumping on board with this, and ask our other state officials to do all they can to protect our rights give to us by the constitution.  This is an election year, so they will be listening to our concerns, but only if you speak up.  Below is an interview Troy King gave on MSNBC.

A Magnificent Political Document

declarationimageLooking back over modern history, it is clear that the United States Government (a/k/a the federal government) has clearly misused, misinterpreted and abused the U.S. Constitution. How did we let this happen? There are many explanations, probably all of them have truth. The biggest problem in regard to the Constitution we face today is ignorance. Ignorance of the document, what it means, and WHY it was written in the first place.

The Constitution of the United States of America, with its written limitations on government and written guarantees of human freedom, is the greatest political document ever written. It is the foundation of the American government. Everyone who serves in government takes an oath to defend it.

The creation of the American Republic with it’s written guarantees for personal freedom is the greatest development for freedom in the entire Western World. The reason the Constitution was written was the fear the founders had of an all-powerful central government. And the fear was real.

When the British government wanted to raise money, they thought of ingenious ways to do so. Colonists were subjected to legislation such as The Stamp Act. This required every document the colonists had in their home; a book, a bankdraft, a deed, a lease, a pamphlet, had to have a stamp depicting the image of the King of England. How did the British government know if this was done? Parliament enacted the “Writs of Assistance Act”. This law authorized British soldiers to knock on the door of any colonist’s home and write themselves permission to enter under the pretext of looking for the stamps. Of course, while there, they could help themselves to property, consume alcohol, take over the home and expel the owners to use the home as their own living quarters for as long as they wished.

This act was the last straw. We fought a revolution, we won a revolution, we wrote the Constitution. In writing the Constitution in that hot sticky summer of 1787 of Philadelphia, delegates were sent from each of the 13 colonies. They had a great debate. The debate was over the origin of our freedoms. Thomas Jefferson and James Madison argued that our freedoms came from our humanity, after all Jefferson had just written in The Declaration of Independence that all men are created equal and endowed by their creator with certain inalienable rights, among which are the right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. This understanding of the origin of our freedoms is called the Natural Law. And, it teaches that because we are created by God, in His image and likeness, and because God is perfectly free; He created Man perfectly free, thus freedom is our birthright. We are free to live, to think, to say what we think, to publish what we think, to worship or not to worship, we have a right to defend ourselves from anyone; even against a tyrannical government,  we have a right to own and enjoy property, a right to travel, and our right to be left alone. These rights are as natural to us as the fingers on the ends of our hands.

The opposing argument in Philadelphia, which was made by the big government crowd of the day, Alexander Hamilton and John Adams folks, was that our freedoms come from the government. And, they said, without government, there could be no freedom. The government that gives freedom, can also take it away. Because we have majority rule in this country, if the majority voted that we could have no freedom of speech; it could be removed. Under this theory, freedom of speech would be gone.

Fortunately for all of us, Thomas Jefferson’s views prevailed and Freedom of Speech prevailed. The concept of natural rights given us by virtue of our humanity, were instilled in the Constitution through the Bill of Rights. These two documents taken together, state the reasons the federal government came into existence. They established a President, Congress, and Judicial branch. Each with separate and distinct responsibilities and limited powers; retaining rights and powers to the States and individuals.

Remember, in Philadelphia it was the States that came together to create the federal government. They gave a little bit of power to the federal government and they stated just how little those powers were and how much they were given. They added a Bill of Rights because they were worried that the new government might someday do the same thing to them as the King of England and his Parliament did to the colonists and which caused the Constitution, the Bill of Rights, the Declaration of Independence to be written; establishing the most magnificent document called the Constitution.

Has the system worked as intended? Has the government followed the wishes of the framers? Has it stayed within the confines of the Constitution? The Constitution was written for two purposes:

1. Establish and define the government 2. Keep the government off the backs of the people.

That is why everyone in government from the founding of our country takes an oath to this very day to uphold the Constitution and human freedom.

Now we find ourselves in a great struggle; the very struggle the framers feared might happen with a centralized, powerful government. Our rights, reserved by the Several States and Individuals when the Constitution was written, guarantee us freedom from a government out-of-control. The Tenth Amendment states: “Anything not expressly granted to the Federal government is reserved for the States or the People.” Although this amendment is very liberally interpreted, it is one of the tenets of the Constitution. This amendment is also known as the States’ Rights Amendment.

It is easy to see that many of the regulations and “laws” the federal government has passed and is contemplating are not only infringing upon the will of the people, they are unconstitutional. We must go back to the writings of Madison and Jefferson to get a complete view of the history of this document and the reason the powers of Congress were limited and the rest were reserved for the “Several States.”

The Kentucky and Virginia Resolutions (or Resolves) were political statements drafted in 1798 and 1799, respectively, in favor of States’ rights and Strict Constructionism. They were written secretly by Vice President Thomas Jefferson and James Madison. Thomas Jefferson wrote the Kentucky Resolution which was passed on November 16, 1798 and December 3, 1799. James Madison wrote the Virginia Resolution which passed December 24, 1798.

The fact that our Republic is unique, that the framers of the Constitution took so much care to prevent tyranny and gave us ways to deal with it constitutionally are reasons why it is so very important that we PRESS, INSIST, IMPOSE our will on our State Legislatures the importance of taking action to reinforce the rights of “the Several States” and in this case, the State of Alabama and us, it’s citizens. The 10th Amendment was written for just the purpose we see today. It is to prevent abuse of government, of tyranny against the “Several States” and against us, as Americans. However, the federal government is thumbing it’s nose at “the Several States” and “We the People”. It will continue to do so until we take all necessary measures to stop the tyrannical government in Washington, D.C.  As the framers of the Constitution were rightly concerned and had the forethought to include in our Constitution balances against a centrally-controlled, toltarian government; we see that they were right in their concern that this power could or would be abused in the future. Let us not lose our country. Let all Americans who believe in freedom, in self-rule and in the Constitution and the Bill of Rights AS THE FRAMERS INTENDED it to be used, STAND together. Let’s find common ground; that common ground is The United States of America. Let your voices be heard.

ACTIONS SPEAK LOUDER THAN WORDS

Mt Rushmore FireworksThe political landscape has changed a great deal in the last ten years. We now have a government that ignores the will of the people, is determined to pass legislation that we know and they know is harmful to the economy, the citizens and the future generations of the United States of America and are bankrupting our children and grandchildren. When Obama campaigned on “hope and change” (two intangibles), how many voters believed we would get the change and no hope that we are seeing? There is a lot of “buyer’s remorse” to go around.
World Net Daily has named “The Tea Party” as its “Person of the Year” for 2009. The tea-party participant – the individual who is frustrated America’s leaders don’t seem to want to “preserve and protect” the republic and gives up his or her own time, talents and money to warn elected leaders to choose the straight and narrow – has been selected over Gov. Sarah Palin; James O’Keefe and Hanna Giles, who launched a series of undercover reports documenting ACORN’s apparent willingness to aid and abet underage prostitution; the anonymous “Climategate whistleblowers” who hacked into a United Kingdom research center and unveiled e-mails that seem to suggest data manipulation; and Rush Limbaugh. So, give yourselves a big pat on the back and look forward to even bigger and dirtier fights this year!
Across the country, Republicans have assembled an impressive roster of challengers for 2010, and in return, Democrats have compiled extensive dossiers aimed at cutting down those candidates before they have a chance to gain momentum. Democrats believe the Republican Party will still be using the same failed strategies that have worked against the GOP in the past several election cycles. Said Brian Smoot, a former political director at the Democratic Committee and now a Democratic consultant, “The problem for Republicans specifically is that they continue to recruit and run flawed candidates, candidates that are too extreme for moderate districts.”

Perhaps it is the Democratic Party that is out-of-touch with voters and the majority of Americans. With the help of The Tea Party, the GOP is recruiting many challengers who have never run for office, theorizing that voters want new faces. The No. 1 issue for the 2010 mid-term elections appears to be jobs (or the lack thereof). The scenario leading into the 2010 mid-term elections indicate that we will see dirty politics-dirtier than usual.

Here in Alabama, we have several key elections. The recent defection of Congressman Parker Griffith to the GOP has caused quite a stir both on the local political scene and the national scene as well. There is speculation that he was recruited by the GOP because of his “moderate” stance on issues. Griffith’s defection has dealt the Democrats a blow, however. He was to be their candidate for the 5th Congressional District of Alabama. He has money and he holds the office. As a GOP, however; he will now face GOP candidates Les Phillip and Mo Brooks. As Brooks pointed out, “Parker Griffith is essentially ineffective as a Congressman. His staff left him, he has lost all committee appointments he had and is facing re-election as a Republican, in a race where the Democratic Party is now scrambling to name a candidate.” Brooks is correct. The Democratic Party of Alabama is now on their second-tier of candidates; their first choices turned them down. Within days, two possible Democratic candidates in the 5th District Primary turned the AL DNC down. Ron Sparks, a two-term agriculture commissioner decided to stay in the race for governor. Former State Auditor Parker said she will run for another term on the Public Service Commission.

The switch of Parker Griffith brought to mind Griffith’s voting record, which is far from conservative. Granted, he voted against the Big 4; Obama’s first budget, no-voted the Stimulus, Cap and Trade, and Obamacare. However, his vote on the budget is slightly deceptive since he originally voted for 9 of the 12 spending bills that make up the budget. And, he voted against all the Stimulus Amendments that would reduce its size.

Parker Griffith Soft on Terror

A quick look at 2009 shows that Griffith voted YES on the 2009 pork-filled Omnibus; YES on Cash for Clunkers, NO on waiving the harmful Davis-Bacon provision, and had a pathetic 0% score on the 2009 RePORK Card. So, with Griffith, we have a pro-pork moderate Congressman, and as the NRCC reminded us in 2008, he has some naivete on the issue of terrorism:
“Democratic State Senator Parker Griffith has been under fire in recent weeks for comments made to a local Baptist association in which he suggested radical Islam isn’t a threat to the U.S. ‘We have nothing to fear from radical Islam. We have nothing to fear from any other religion if we are strong on our own beliefs. I don’t fear radical Islam’, said Griffith. This is from an audio tape made of his appearance. Adding insult to injury, Griffith had already pointed a finger at American culture: ‘I think America’s greatest enemy is America and its materialism’, he said. “ *
Griffith has a record of not holding town hall meetings in the Huntsville/Decatur area, not answering The Tea Party’s call for a town hall meeting locally and basically “stonewalling” citizens who showed up at his local office in Huntsville in order to leave messages and drop off letters. At one point, his office was closed early; the staff peering through windows at voters as they came by in order to drop off letters in person, only to find it closed.

The Chairman of the Alabama Democratic Committee, Joe Turnham, said of Griffith, “Democrats of every stripe and philosophy sweated and bled for this man. He narrowly became a congressman through the hard work, votes and financial contributions of thousands of Democrats. Today they feel betrayed.”
Rumors have swirled around the 5th Congressional District that member(s) of the GOP have made telephone calls to certain big donors here in Huntsville, telling them not to contribute to Les Phillips’ campaign nor to Mo Brook’s campaign but instead hand money to Parker Griffith. This writer spent an entire day chasing down those who were supposedly involved in this and was told unequivocally that this never took place, never happened and would never be done.
As Mo Brooks observed, “Why would the Alabama GOP recruit or support candidates who are “middle-of-the road” representatives who will switch parties in order to be re-elected? This strategy is part of the reason the GOP lost the House of Representatives and the Senate and the White House. We need people who will govern on a set of good principles.”
One thing that hasn’t been mentioned much; the media doesn’t report on, is the flood of Republicans becoming Democrats. Why? Because it does not happen. Under Bill Clinton, George W. Bush, and Barack Obama we have seen lots of Democrats become Republicans. We have seen lots of liberals become conservatives. But we rarely, rarely more rarely than a snow leopard in the Himalayas do we see a Republican or a conservative going over to their side. Polling data does show that while Independents are fleeing the Democratic Party and Obama, they still dislike the Republicans. The latest Quinnipac Poll shows that Congress has just over a 20% approval rating but the approval rating of the Republican Party among Independents is only 18%. Voters are mad, and are mad at everyone. The GOP must begin to listen to the voice of those who have been screaming at them all year.
So, where do we stand in the 5th Congressional District since Parker Griffith changed his stripes? Well, the election just became a five month election. It is a blink of an eye.

Voters must decide who to back and should be strong in their determination to make sure we don’t see a run-off election with Parker Griffith, who has money and can out-gun either of the two other GOP candidates; Les Phillip or Mo Brooks.

GOP Candidate Les Phillip Takes Aim at Griffith

Les Phillip wasted no time drawing a stark contrast between himself and Parker Griffith in the race for the Republican nomination in Alabama’s Fifth Congressional District. The Phillip campaign released a mail piece to Republican households reminding them of Parker Griffith’s deep Democratic roots, including recent contributions to Howard Dean and Harry Reid.
“We definitely believe these contributions are fair game,” said Phillip in a statement released by his campaign. “Dean and Reid want to socialize medicine, attack American values, raise taxes and capitulate in the war on terror. When Parker Griffith wrote these liberals big campaign checks, he told everyone that they represent his values. He can do that if he likes, but I can tell you this: Reid and Dean do not represent the values of the people of this district. The race for Congress begins and ends with values,” continued Phillip. “I will not wait to fight for your values or your votes in the coming June primary.”

A United States Navy veteran and small business owner, Les Phillip has been a member of the Republican Party his entire adult life and is a candidate for Congress from Alabama’s Fifth Congressional District. Phillip also backs individual state efforts to enforce the 10th Amendment, “I am in favor of states defending in their legislatures their rights given to them under the Constitution. Until states begin to restore their rights, they will continue to be hamstrung by Washington, D.C.”

Truly, Republicans have two conservative candidates. In Phillip, they have someone who has been a Republican for years, as opposed to hours. Les Phillip is young, Black, and Conservative, the type of person most Republicans would avow they need in Congress. Exactly why should the rug be pulled out from beneath Phillip or Brooks in order to make room for a guy who just realized his lifetime affiliation with the Democrats was about to cost him his career? This is why we have primaries.

GOP Candidate Mo Brooks Confident

Mo Brooks has competed in three GOP primaries, winning them all by an average margin of 33% among the 5th Congressional District voters. In five general elections, Brooks has averaged 66% support of voters. Brooks has seen his campaign contributions rise since Griffith announced that he had changed to the GOP. “We look forward to facing whomever the Democrats offer in the general election as their candidate to continue to vote to empower House Speaker Nancy Pelosi,” said Brooks.

Alabamians will elect a new governor and in districts throughout the state, they will have an opportunity to vote on the 140 seats in the Legislature. The state’s other constitutional offices, including lieutenant governor, attorney general, treasurer, secretary of state, agriculture commissioner and auditor, also will be on the ballot. The Tea Party can expect the election and the legislative session to be brutal. Legislative sessions are more political with an election looming and lawmakers will have fewer dollars to work with as they craft the budgets for 2011. Both sides will spend a lot of money during the election as Republicans try to wrest control of the Legislature from Democrats and as candidates try to pick up the first open governor’s seat in a generation.

MORE FOR THE 2010 “TO-DO” LIST

Huntsville TDTP23As I began working on this week’s blog, it seemed appropriate to address-emphasize what The Tea Party can do, in addition to voting in upcoming primaries and elections. In future blogs, we are going to discuss how candidates, party strategy and other things can affect elections. But, The Tea Party Movement must do everything possible to strengthen itself. Democrats have stated emphatically that they “will not lose” in 2010. They are counting on the failure of The American People and The Tea Party Movement to drop the ball.

Most everyone knows how and why The Tea Parties went from an idea to reality within just a short time. Americans who are awake want to do everything possible to stop what they see happening to America, their freedoms and the future of their children. There is a small, but active group in this country that has control right now. They are a minority but they are in control. And we must take back that control with the 2010 elections. We will win this country (save it) or lose the battle this year.

It has been said that politics begin at home. This is very true. During an interview for an upcoming blog, a candidate for political office said something that makes so much sense. He said it as an American; not a politician. We want to preserve our heritage and values here. In order to do that, members of The Tea Party need to become as organized as possible, as quickly as possible. If your neighbors aren’t involved, get them involved! There are some who say they don’t have time, they aren’t interested, and so forth. The fight for this country will be won or lost, I believe, with the 2010 elections. We simply cannot sit on the fence any longer. There is a part each person can play, and each of us is important in this fight. And it is a fight.

Be active, go to meetings, stay informed of all the issues. If you have college-age children, get them involved as well. Recruit your relatives and friends. Be persistent and be firm. Have the facts about what is at stake, and do they really trust Washington, D.C. to “take care of them”? There is a generation of Americans who are misled because they have not been presented with the real facts about how  and why this country was formed, and why America has stood up for so many countries against socialism and communism in the past. We certainly can’t let this cancer takeover our nation now. It is true that most countries fall from within, not from outside forces.

This, in no way endorses the GOP, but many Tea Party members believe in order to be effective, we must utilize the GOP and opportunities within that party in to reach our goals. A third party is a huge gamble. I’m not sure many Americans are willing to take many more gambles. Pollster Scott Rasmussen suggests that some Republicans are becoming irrelevant because they have broken their link to rank-and-file Republicans. There is a risk that the Republicans will become a minor party, or at least spend the next twenty years in the wilderness, as they did from 1932 to 1952. We cannot let that happen. And, some GOP members are said to be actively recruiting “moderate” Democrats to come across the isle and join the GOP. An observation to be made regarding that mentality is that this attitude/theory lost the House of Representatives, the Senate and The White House for the GOP. Moderates were run as candidates and conservatives did not support them or simply did not vote. We cannot afford to let this happen again. We don’t need “middle of the roaders” switching parties and in doing so, making the GOP weaker instead of stronger. Let’s look at the forest, not the trees.

The majority of Americans, according to polls, identify with being “conservative”. Most members of the GOP want the party to move toward being more conservative, being more fiscally responsible, using and respecting our U.S. Constitution and working for “the people”. We can have great influence over the direction of the GOP by running for seats within the local and state GOP organizations.

There has been much talk of Tea Party members running as candidates for local and state elections. But, it hasn’t often been heard how important it could be for Tea Party members to run for local and state positions within the GOP, as well. This would give this movement inside strength, more influence and a “bigger stick” to use. This would give this movement access to how funds are disbursed to candidate’s campaigns, and who is endorsed.

One noteworthy news item from today regarding former Democrat – now Republican Congressman Parker Griffin. Almost his entire staff in his Washington, D.C. Office resigned today. This makes Griffin essentially ineffective. More on that next time.
